Council President Mary Sheffield and Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.
Detroit Free Press investigative columnist M.L. Elrick notes that the two mayoral candidates—Council President Mary Sheffield and Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.—have come out of their post-primary slumber: "It's been so quiet since the Aug. 5 primary, you may be forgiven if you've forgotten that two candidates are competing to be the next mayor of Detroit."
But his column leaves you with the impression he's not overly impressed with the awakening.
He writes that last week, primary opponent Saunteel Jenkins endorsed Sheffield: "The event was so carefully orchestrated, and Sheffield was so sheltered by her staff, it seemed they believed Madam President had been dropped into the middle of a war zone or some other hot spot where one wrong move — like answering too many questions — could be fatal."
And he writes about Kinloch holding a virtual press conference on Friday, where reporters asked every question they could muster. He writes of the Kinloch team:
"They said their key to victory is winning over undecided voters, visiting more living rooms, making more phone calls and knocking on more doors. In other words, the same strategy Team Kinloch used to finish a distant second in the primary."
Kinloch also took a shot at Sheffield's 12 years on city council, saying: "We've seen 12 years of broken promises."
