"Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming," Sinclair posted on X. "Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return."
Sinclair lists ABC affiliate WGTU-TV in Traverse City as a property it operates. The ABC station in Detroit is owned by the E. W. Scripps Company, which is not tied to Sinclair.
Deadline Detroit left a message with a person in the newsroom for comment with the Traverse City station but did not receive an immediate response. An email was also left with the Sinclair group, but did not receive an immediate response.
ABC initially suspended Kimmel after remarks he made about the late conservative commentator Charlie Kirk and President Donald Trump.
The network received pushback from actors and fans, and some people canceled their subscriptions to Hulu and the Disney Channel, which are owned by ABC's parent company, Disney.
On Monday, Disney issued a statement:
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last few days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
The New York Post reports that Kimmel will address the controversy in his Tuesday monologue but will stop short of apologizing.
